SUMMARY:Creep Of The Week: Donald Trump
DESCRIPTION:Creep Of The Week: Donald Trump\nD’Anne Witkowski - January 13-19\, 2020\nAs I write this\, it is the day before Christmas Eve and the second night of Hanukkah. In our house\, we celebrate both. This is because we have Jews in our extended family and because my wife and I like to celebrate traditions with our son. It's our goal to raise him to be a feminist who embraces a variety of cultures and celebrates diversity. He is also fluent in Spanish. Basically\, we are everything conservatives fear when they imagine a boy being raised by lesbian parents. We are quite proud of that.\nSo\, in 2019. What a year\, eh? A lot of awfulness. Honestly\, it's hard to think of good news because there's an orange cloud hanging over everything. And that orange cloud is named Donald Trump.\nIt is still incredible to me that someone so proudly ignorant\, dishonest\, narcissistic\, racist\, misogynist\, and cruel is the president of the United States. It's like a bad dream I can't wake up from.\nTrump is instructive when it comes to how I do NOT want my son to turn out. It's a strange position to be in as a parent\, looking at something Trump does or says and then having to explain to my son how I would be so ashamed if he were to behave that way.\nWhen I told my son that Trump had been impeached\, he got very excited. Because he\, like many Americans\, mistakenly understood impeachment to be synonymous with removal. It\, of course\, is not. A president can be impeached but not removed.\nOn Dec. 19\, Trump sent an absolutely batshit insane letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) in which he protested the impeachment.\nTrump wrote\, "[Democrats] are the ones interfering in America's elections. You are the ones subverting America's Democracy. You are the ones Obstructing Justice. You are the ones bringing pain and suffering to our Republic for your own selfish personal\, political\, and partisan gain."\n\n\n\nIn other words\, "I know you are\, but what am I."\nHe also wrote\, "You have developed a full-fledged case of what many in the media call Trump Derangement Syndrome\, and sadly\, you will never get over it!" Super presidential.\nIt's all up to the Senate now\, which is controlled by Republicans. they all maintain that they love Trump\, it's True Love Forever\, sitting in a tree K-I-S-S-I-N-G\, gonna have his babies\, and if loving Trump is wrong they're proud to be right.\nThere was a time when people like Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) were calling Trump "a kook."\nIn Feb. 2016 Graham told Fox News\, "I think he's crazy. I think he's unfit to be president."Then on May 6\, 2016\, Graham Tweeted\, "If we nominate Trump\, we will get destroyed\, and we will deserve it."\nBut that was then. Now Graham is basically worshiping Trump as a God. In fact\, Chris Hayes\, host of MSNBC's All In\, called Graham "one of the most devoted and self-abasing acolytes of the president."\nIt's an apt description since Trump has become a cult leader. Unquestioned\, unchallenged\, unchecked. What could possibly go wrong?\nRegarding his role as a juror in the upcoming trial in the Senate\, Graham said\, "I'm not trying to pretend to be a fair juror here."\n[caption id="attachment_18168" align="alignright" width="300"]Donald Trump[/caption]\nIn other words\, he has no intention of doing his job. Definitely try that next time you get called for jury duty. See how it works out. (Though I would like to point out that jury duty is incredibly important and a sign of how messed up our justice system is that being on a jury has become synonymous with being a pain in the ass and a hardship. Elect people who want to reform our justice system for the better\, folks).\nMeanwhile\, Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) has publicly said he plans to work directly with Trump's legal team.\nAnd yet Republicans are calling for Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts)\, Bernie Sanders (D-Vermont)\, Cory Booker (D-New Jersey)\, Amy Klobuchar (D-Minnesota)\, and Michael Bennet (D-Colorado) to recuse themselves since they're all running to be Trump's Democratic challenger. They'd probably prefer that Sen. Kamala Harris (D-California) sit this one out\, too.\nBut hey\, maybe Republicans will surprise us. Maybe they will rise to the occasion and do the right. Oh\, man. I can't even finish that sentence. They won't. To everyone holding their breath hoping that Republicans care at all about the rule of law\, you need to start breathing again right away. We need you alive to vote in 2020.\nD’Anne Witkowski is a poet\, writer\, and comedian living in Michigan with her wife and son. She has been writing about LGBT politics for over a decade.
