De-escalation Training With The Silent Witness Peacekeepers
Tuesday March 5 2019, 6:00pm
In January 2007, Westboro Baptist Church protested at York Suburban High School's production of "The Laramie Project." In the space of 10 short minutes, we watched a smiling, laughing group of counter-protesters turn into a hate-filled mob in response to what they perceived as spiritual violence. Thankfully, our training as Silent Witness Peacekeepers provided us with the tools we needed to calm the crowd, and a peaceful evening followed.
In the past few years, we've learned that the presence of anti-LGBT protesters is not the only opportunity to use our skills - we have used them frequently when talking to our legislators, when faced with any political or religious discussion that turns into an argument or even dealing with road rage.
Come join us in a discussion where we can share ideas and concerns, and learn more about non-violent communication and compassionate listening.
