OutFest History
The idea for a National Coming Out Day (NCOD) grew from the second march on Washington for gay and lesbian equality on October 11, 1987. The idea quickly took hold in the LGBT community, spawning celebrations in numerous cities around the country. In 1990, Philadelphia was one of the first cities to organize around NCOD on a large scale and Philly Pride created a block party to showcase the many facets of our community. The event was formerly located at 12th and Pine St, but Philly Pride relocated it into the heart of the gayborhood, and the event quickly grew into what the greater Philadelphia region now uniquely celebrates as “OutFest.”street sign The word “gayborhood” was first used in connection with our event in October 1995 when David Warner, the editor of Philadelphia City Paper, did a write-up of our event calling it “a beautiful day in the gayborhood.” Philly Pride immediately starting promoting its next PrideDay parade as commencing “in the heart of the gayborhood.” From that beginning, it has now become a nationally used term. On April 18, 2007, the city of Philadelphia officially recognized the area by adding 36 gay pride rainbow flag symbols to street signs bordering the Gayborhood area. Thirty-two (32) additional signs were added in June 2010. Held the Sunday before Columbus Day every October, OutFest attracts nearly 40,000 people. Keith Haring’s image was used in connection with NCOD, and we incorporated him into our Liberty Bell (at first) and now our skyline. OutFest is hugely popular because: (1) it had the feel of an old-fashioned block party, (2) it’s free, (3) it’s in the gayborhood, (4) all local bars, restaurants, and businesses do something inside or outside, (5) entertainment showcases local talent, (6) all community organizations participate, (7) there are carnival attractions, (8) there is a massive flea market, (9) there is always something new and unique, and (10) everybody is there!
