MCBA's LGBTQ+ Committee Celebrates Pride History Month at Roosterspin in New Brunswick NJ

Thursday, June 19, 2025 - 5:30PM to 8:00PM EST

Pride History is celebrated in June to commemorate the Stonewall uprising in June of 1969, considered throughout the world as the starting point of the LGBTQ+ civil rights movement.

On June 28, 1969, the police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York’s West Village. This routine raid on a gay bar was the breaking point for the gay community. It was joined by LGBTQ+ people from around the neighborhood and throughout the city and turned into 5 days of riots. While these riots were not the first or last incidents where gay and lesbian people stood up for their rights, they had the most impact. So much so, that one year after “Stonewall” New York City held its first Gay Pride Parade, giving rise to the LGBTQ+ civil rights movement.

Why a Drag Performance? In the LGBTQ+ community, the drag artform has special significance, because in addition to being recognized as an entertaining artform, during the Stonewall uprising, drag queens were in and leading the fight against abuse and discrimination. Therefore, in addition to an artform, drag is a symbol and a reminder of the community’s fight for equality.
